The HRXL series of ultrasonic rangefinders from MaxBotix give analog voltage, pulse width and serial data measurements of the distance from the sensor to an object or surface. They're great for measuring tank or bin levels for industrial processes.

We've been impressed with the improvement in stability and object identifiction of these sensors over previous versions. Compared to the LV and XL series sensors, the HRXL series features 1 mm resolution, automatic temperature compensation, automatic target size compensation, simultaneous multiple sensors operation and better noise reduction algorithms.

The automatic temperature compensation adjusts the ranging to account for the changing speed of sound in air, enabling the 1 mm resolution of these sensors.

Most low cost ultrasonic rangefinders will report the range to smaller size targets as farther than the actual distance. In addition, they may also report the range to larger size targets as closer than the actual distance. These sensors have automatic target size compensation which greatly reduces this effect.

The Most-Likely filter in these sensors is designed to report the distance to the largest acoustic return while ignoring smaller targets. When targets are of similar amplitude reflections, preference is given to the closest target. If the largest target is removed from the field of view, the sensor will switch to the target that gives the next largest detectable return. This allows the sensor to detect a surface level while rejecting noise induced by reflections and floating debris.

This is MaxBotix's most advanced weather resistant sensor designed for target detection and ranging outdoors or in tank or bin applications. The robust PVC housing is designed to meet IP67 water intrusion standards. The sensor cone on this model gives it a very narrow beamwidth - great for detecting objects directly in front of the sensor but not for covering a wide area. See also our wider beamwidth version.

The sensor features three signal outputs, all of which work at the same time. It gives a voltage from 0% to about 100% of the supply voltage depending on the range of the target. (The actual scale factor is Vcc/5120 per 1 mm.)

The pulse pin outputs a pulse width representation of the distance with a scale factor of 1µS per mm. Output range is 300 µs for 300 mm to 5000 µs for 5000 mm.

The serial output is TTL compatible (see also the RS-232 compatible version of the same sensor) and reports the range in millimetres as a decimal number.

Please note: Some HRXL, LV, XL & I²CXL can have F-option added to them. The F-option offers additional proctection necessary in a few hazardous chemical environments.
