Leadshine Stepper Motor Guide (Closed and Open-Loop)

Friday, October 10, 2025

A stepper motor is a type of electric motor that moves in precise steps, making it ideal for applications where accurate positioning is needed, like 3D printers, CNC machines, and robotics. Instead of rotating continuously like regular motors, it moves in small, fixed angles (steps) when electrical pulses are sent to it.

A stepper motor driver is the electronic device that controls the motor. It sends the right sequence of electrical pulses to the motor coils to make it turn the correct amount, direction, and speed. Some drivers are simple (open-loop), while others are more advanced (closed-loop), using sensors to monitor the motor's position and adjust in real time for more accurate control.

Our video for using Leadshine stepper motors and drivers walks through wiring the system, tuning driver parameters (especially for closed‑loop versus open‑loop operation), and performing a test run to verify everything is working properly.
